    I like feeding the gulls when I'm on holiday at the seaside. Once I caught too many mackerel to fit in the chalet freezer so I chopped a load of them up and fed the gulls - they loved them. I like the way that if you hold a chip up in the air the gulls fly down and take it from your fingers. I love interacting with them.

    It’s great that young people are getting on board with conservation … but in parts of Bristol there are signs indicating a £1k fine for feeding gulls and pigeons. The herring gulls, in particular, are a menace AND menacing. They need controlling, rather than conserving😂. They are doing for both greater- and lesser-Black-backed Gulls - which also need conserving. I gather there is a herring-blackback hybrid in Bristol and other cities. Genocide by Rape is a War Crime; it’s happening within the gull population - similar to the hybridisation of Hyacinthoides non-scripta by the thuggish H. Hispanica. A sensible balance is required with selective control - as with the localised badger culls.

    Well done, Cooper. It is wonderful that we have ambassadors like you to help raise awareness of our precious wildlife. I love all of our nature and wildlife. We have a couple of well-behaved gulls that visit our garden. They pick up seed and bits the wild birds leave when I have put the seed and food out. I have accepted them as part of my wildlife family. They are very intelligent and endearing. I am getting used to all their different vocalisation calls. We need more fantastic children like you to champion wildlife. You are officially my hero.🎉😊

    Oh my word! What an incredible sound! I am not aware of these birds at all. Fascinating! I try to recognise bird calls where I live but there are so many!!! Most are bearable apart from the Green Parrot which is incredibly loud and the monthly meeting of crows and magpies in the mating season, which I say they are coming to my dating club in the trees.

    Often you cannot see the bird that is singing or it is silhouetted against a bright sky. It means you can only know it is there when it sings. I have found that blackbirds make different sounds for different things.

    Hi Angus, I moved to Point from Southampton 19 years ago. I saw and heard corncrakes for several years in Broker but now nothing. Do you know what causes them to move or leave an area?

  • @59supercool
    @59supercool 9 днів тому

    I grew up in Larne Co. Antrim hearing Corncrakes all through the summer nights up until the late 1970's or early 1980's and would fall asleep to their calls. The nearest field was around a hundred yards away so they were quite loud. Hay-making (with the meadow grasses left standing until August) stopped and the grass was cut much earlier for silage and this meant the Corncrakes lost their nests and their chicks. I would sometimes go for a rural bicycle ride at night and most of the fields would have a nest or two so that the crek crek sound followed me along the dark country roads. They never kept me awake, quite the opposite in fact, and I miss them now they are gone.

    As a child I made toad houses by packing moist dirt over my foot then slowly slide my foot out. I would leave it and come back the next day. Most of the time I would have a toad in the toad house the next morning. Although not a strong toad house, it was fun. The houses would last a few days.

    more birds get hit by cars that just random killing. A15 for example has dead owls lying by the side of the road daily due to the treeline being next to the busiest road in lincolnshire. I also love all birds and do not favor birds of prey as they are all importantly equal. why can't we protect starlings or sparrows?

    Fantastic and fascinating work. I would suggest however the best i.e the safest place will always be any landholding or landscape which endorses full take up of the “three-legged stool” conservation approach as with Grey Partridge conservation. All-year-round habitat supply, abundant food and proportionate legal predator controls. Here is hoping that any success you may achieve continues and that those “on the ground” with that much needed energy and resources are permanently on-board long into the future. If not, you will be doomed to fail our Curlews and many other species besides.
